Step 1: Verify Legal Registration and Export History

Start with documents the supplier must already have. The unified social credit code (18 digits) on a Chinese business license can be checked through public registries; confirm the registered scope covers metal manufacturing or international trade, and that the entity is active, not deregistered.

Then ask the harder question: how long have they exported, and to where? A supplier shipping regularly to the EU or North America has already survived REACH-style paperwork, export documentation and the compliance demands of demanding markets. Ask for a bill-of-lading sample or port statistics from their product category — legitimate exporters answer this easily.

Step 2: Certificates Before Conversations

This is the step that filters fastest. Any serious metals supplier provides mill test certificates (MTC) with heat chemistry for the actual heat number being shipped — EN 10204 3.1 equivalent. Ask for a redacted sample certificate for a product you know well.

Step 3: Know Whether You Are Talking to a Factory or a Trader

Neither is automatically wrong — but each has a correct use. Factories give you the best price on their own product lines, direct process control, and faster root-cause responses on quality issues. Trading companies give you breadth across product categories, smaller mixed orders, and sometimes better documentation discipline across multiple mills.

The mistake is paying factory-direct expectations to a trader, or expecting a factory to supply a category it merely brokers. Verify which you are dealing with: registered scope, factory address verifiable by satellite map or audit report, and a direct question — "which of these products do you produce in your own plant?"
