Buyers should verify four things on any H13 export offer: the full certificate chemistry against AISI/EN/JIS equivalents, the delivered condition (pre-hardened HRC 44–52 or annealed), section size availability up to the diameter their die requires, and whether the price includes mill test certificates.

H13 wins die-casting and forging programs not because it is the hardest tool steel — it is not — but because it survives an environment that destroys most others: rapid, repeated cycling between molten-metal heat and cooling-water cold. This guide covers what H13 is, where it outperforms alternatives, what its equivalents are across standards, and what to check before placing an export order.

What H13 Is

H13 is an AISI-designated hot-work tool steel: medium carbon (0.32–0.45%) alloyed with 4.75–5.50% chromium, 1.10–1.75% molybdenum and 0.80–1.20% vanadium. The chromium provides hardenability and a measure of corrosion resistance during storage; the molybdenum and vanadium form stable carbides that resist softening at die-working temperatures; the moderate carbon keeps the steel tough enough to absorb thermal shock.

The grade is air-hardening, meaning heavy sections quench with less distortion and crack risk than water-hardening tool steels. That matters for large die blocks: a 400 mm square die-casting die block can be through-hardened without the quench cracking that would ruin a water-hardening grade of the same size.

Equivalent Grades Across Standards

H13 appears under different names depending on the standard system a drawing references. These are the accepted cross-references:

The equivalents are close but not always identical — some EN variants specify tighter sulfur limits, and Japanese SKD61 may differ slightly in vanadium range. When a customer drawing names 1.2344 or SKD61, Chinese mills supplying "H13" are within normal industry practice, but the certificate should still be checked against the original standard's chemistry window if the application is critical.

Where H13 Is Used

The grade clusters around applications where die surfaces see sustained heat:

  • Aluminum die casting — the dominant use. Molten aluminum at ~600–680 °C cycles against the die surface every shot; H13's resistance to heat checking (thermal fatigue cracking) is the reason it outlasts every cold-work grade in this service.
  • Hot forging dies — hammer and press dies shaping steel at 1,000 °+ contact temperatures.
  • Hot extrusion tooling — dies, mandrels and dummy blocks pushing aluminum, copper and brass through sections.
  • Hot shear blades and punches — cutting or piercing heated stock.
  • Plastic mold cavities where high polish and thermal cycling resistance are both required.

Cold applications — blanking, cold stamping, thread rolling — belong to cold-work grades like D2, which hold higher hardness (HRC 58–62) but soften rapidly above ~450 °C. The two grades are frequently confused because both carry chromium-molybdenum chemistry; the deciding question is die surface temperature, not hardness on paper.

Properties Buyers Should Verify

As-delivered H13 in pre-hardened condition typically sits at HRC 44–52 (Yuze Metal supplies pre-hardened round bar 10–500 mm with this band). For critical tooling, the certificate and process records should show:

  1. Full heat chemistry against the ordered standard — not a partial list. Carbon below 0.32% lowers as-quenched hardness; vanadium below 0.80% reduces thermal fatigue resistance.
  2. Delivery condition — pre-hardened (with stated hardness band) or annealed (~max 229 HB) for machining with heat treatment to follow by the buyer's tool room.
  3. Ultrasonic inspection for large die blocks — soundness defects in heavy sections cause premature die failure. Confirm the test standard (SEP 1921 / ASTM A388 are common) for blocks above roughly 100 mm.
  4. Microcleanliness and banding where die life is measured in hundreds of thousands of shots.

Heat Treatment Basics

For the annealed-bar procurement route, H13 austenitizes at 1,020–1,060 °C, air quenches, and then requires double tempering at 550–620 °C. The second temper is not optional: it transforms retained austenite and stabilizes the microstructure, preventing dimensional drift and hardness scatter in service. Pre-hardened bar arrives already treated this way, which is why most export buyers take pre-hardened stock and machine directly.

Sourcing H13 from China

Chinese tool steel export mills supply H13 in round bar, square bar and die blocks, commonly 10–500 mm diameter (Yuze Metal's range) with optional CNC pre-machining to near-net blocks so tool rooms receive parts ready for finish machining. When comparing offers, normalize for: test-certificate inclusion (EN 10204 3.1 equivalent), condition and hardness band, diameter tolerance, and ultrasonic testing for heavy sections. A low quote on annealed bar without certificates is rarely comparable to pre-hardened, certified stock — the tool-room rework and inspection gaps cost more than the price difference.
