D2 (DIN 1.2379 / JIS SKD11 / GB Cr12MoV) is the standard cold-work tool steel for high-wear dies: blanking, cold stamping, coining and thread rolling. It holds HRC 58–62 with exceptional abrasive wear resistance from its chromium-carbide-rich structure, but it must never be used where the die surface exceeds roughly 450 °C — that role belongs to hot-work grades like H13. Buyers should verify chemistry against AISI D2 / 1.2379 equivalents, delivered hardness band, and ultrasonic soundness on heavy sections.

D2 is the grade behind most high-volume stamping and blanking tooling in production worldwide. Its defining trait — a microstructure loaded with hard chromium carbides — makes it one of the most wear-resistant common tool steels available, and also one of the most misunderstood in cross-grade substitution. This guide covers its properties, equivalents, applications and export-buying checks.

What D2 Is

D2 is a high-carbon, high-chromium cold-work tool steel: 1.40–1.60% carbon with 11.0–13.0% chromium, plus 0.70–1.20% molybdenum and up to about 1.10% vanadium. The combination produces a large volume fraction of hard chromium carbides (around Cr7C3) dispersed through a tempered martensite matrix. Those carbides are far harder than the steel around them — harder, in fact, than most abrasive particles the die will meet in service — which is why D2 cutting edges resist grinding wear so effectively.

The trade-off is toughness. The same carbide network that blocks abrasive wear also acts as a stress-raiser network: D2 is less forgiving of shock loading, poor die alignment or sharp internal corners than lower-carbide grades. Design details matter — generous corner radii, proper die clearance and supported punch heads extend D2 tooling life dramatically.

One note on the Chinese grade: mills most commonly supply Cr12MoV, whose chemistry window sits close to D2 but is not identical in every element. Buyers whose drawings call out AISI D2 or 1.2379 specifically should request certificates checked against those windows — the difference is usually small, but it belongs in the order confirmation, not discovered at incoming inspection.

Where D2 Is Used — and Where It Is Not

D2 earns its keep wherever the failure mode is abrasive wear at room temperature:

  • Blanking and punching dies for steel and stainless strip — the classic application. Die life between regrinds on medium-carbon strip commonly runs several times that of lower-alloy cold-work grades.
  • Cold stamping and forming dies for high-volume programs.
  • Coining and embossing dies, where edge detail must survive millions of impressions.
  • Thread rolling dies for fastener production.
  • Powder compaction and abrasive-filled plastic tooling, where the carbide network outwears most alternatives.

Where D2 does not belong: die casting, forging and hot extrusion. Above roughly 450 °C, D2's tempered martensite softens and its wear advantage evaporates; thermal cycling also cracks its carbide-rich structure. Hot-work tooling calls for H13 (1.2344 / SKD61), which trades some hardness for thermal-fatigue resistance. A useful shorthand for buyers: if the die touches hot metal, H13; if it works cold against hard or abrasive material, D2.

Properties Buyers Should Verify

Pre-hardened D2 bar typically delivers at HRC 58–62 (Yuze Metal supplies pre-hardened round bar 10–400 mm and flat bar 10–300 mm in this band). On the certificate and in the order confirmation, check:

  1. Chemistry against the ordered standard — carbon in the 1.40–1.60% window is what creates the carbide volume that defines the grade's wear resistance.
  2. Delivery condition — pre-hardened with stated band, or annealed (max ~255 HB) for machining before the buyer's heat treatment.
  3. Ultrasonic soundness for heavy blocks — carbide segregation in thick sections is the main internal-quality risk; for die blocks above ~100 mm, specify UT testing to SEP 1921 or ASTM A388.
  4. Carbide distribution class where blanking-edge chipping has been a historical problem — finer distributed carbides improve edge toughness.

Heat Treatment and Machining Notes

D2 austenitizes at 1,000–1,040 °C, air quenches, and is tempered at 200–250 °C for the standard 60–62 HRC working hardness (higher tempering temperatures trade hardness for a measure of toughness). Double tempering stabilizes the structure. In the annealed state it machines acceptably but noticeably slower than H13; the carbide network also makes grinding more demanding — wheels and dressing intervals matter in the tool room.

Because it is air-hardening, D2 sections quench with low distortion, which helps maintain die tolerances through heat treatment. Still, design the tool room's process around stress-relief anneals during rough machining of deep cavities to keep final dimensions honest.

Sourcing D2 from China

Export supply is typically round bar 10–400 mm, flat bar 10–300 mm and blocks, pre-hardened to the 58–62 HRC band with mill test certificates (Yuze Metal's D2 program follows this format, with CNC pre-machining available for near-net die sets). When comparing quotes, align on: certificate chemistry against AISI D2/1.2379 windows, hardness band, UT testing on heavy sections, and whether flat-bar edges are sawn or flame-cut (flame-cut edges need stock removal before final grinding). As with all tool steels, a certificate-complete pre-hardened offer and a bare annealed bar quote are rarely equivalent once tool-room costs are counted.
