"Which stainless steel grade should I buy?" is the technical question buyers most often put to a supplier, and it is hard to answer in one sentence. The right grade depends on the operating environment, the service life required, the budget, and the mechanical properties needed.

Four grades cover most industrial applications, so the practical question is knowing when each one fits and when it does not:

  • 304 (UNS S30400), the general-purpose austenitic stainless.
  • 316 / 316L (UNS S31600 / S31603), the marine-grade austenitic stainless, with molybdenum.
  • 2205 (UNS S31803 / S32205); the duplex stainless, with double the strength.
  • 430 (UNS S43000), the ferritic stainless, with no nickel.

The Decision Framework

Work through these five questions in order before opening a grade specification:

  1. What is the environment? (indoor, outdoor, marine, chemical, acidic, chloride-rich?)
  2. What service life is required? (5, 10, 25, 50 years?)
  3. What mechanical properties are needed? (yield strength, impact resistance, weldability?)
  4. What is the budget? (is cost per tonne a primary constraint?)
  5. Are there regulatory or certification requirements? (food contact, pressure equipment, nuclear?)

Answering these five usually identifies the correct grade without expert consultation.

304: The Default Option

304 stainless is the most widely produced and consumed stainless steel grade in the world. It is an austenitic stainless with roughly 18% chromium and 8% nickel, specified for general-purpose applications that need a balanced combination of corrosion resistance, formability and weldability.

Choose 304 when:

  • The application is in a general industrial, urban or interior environment.
  • You are fabricating tanks, kitchen equipment, architectural trim or food processing equipment that sees no chloride exposure.
  • You need good weldability and formability without heat treatment.
  • The budget is a constraint and a lower-grade stainless is defensible.

Do not choose 304 when:

  • The steel will be exposed to seawater, de-icing salts or chloride-rich environments. In these, 304 is susceptible to pitting and crevice corrosion.
  • The application involves hydrochloric acid or other chlorinated chemicals.
  • You need the higher strength that duplex grades provide.

316 / 316L: When 304 Is Not Enough

316 stainless is an austenitic grade with the same chromium–nickel base as 304, plus 2–3% molybdenum. The molybdenum is the critical difference: it materially improves resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride environments. 316L is the low-carbon version of 316, with a maximum carbon content of 0.03%, which improves weldability by reducing the risk of sensitisation and intergranular corrosion in the heat-affected zone.

Choose 316 / 316L when:

  • The steel will be in a marine environment, boat fittings, coastal architecture, marine railings.
  • The application involves chemicals, particularly chlorinated ones; chemical processing, pharmaceutical, or food processing that uses chlorinated cleaning agents.
  • The application is in a healthcare or laboratory environment where harsh cleaning agents are routine.
  • You are in doubt and want insurance against chloride exposure, the additional cost of 316 over 304 is typically 10–15% per tonne, which is often worth the corrosion resistance.

Do not choose 316 when:

  • The environment is dry, indoor and chloride-free. In these conditions, 304 performs equally well and costs less.
  • You are on a tight budget and have confirmed that chloride exposure is not a risk.

2205 Duplex: Strength Plus Corrosion Resistance

2205 duplex stainless is a two-phase steel with roughly 50% austenite and 50% ferrite in its microstructure. That dual-phase structure gives a yield strength roughly double that of 304 or 316, about 450 MPa versus 205 MPa, and corrosion resistance that exceeds 316 in many chloride environments.

Choose 2205 when:

  • You need high strength and can reduce wall thickness or weight as a result, pressure vessels, chemical processing tanks, structural applications.
  • You are in an oil and gas, petrochemical or desalination application where strength and corrosion resistance are both required.
  • You need corrosion resistance beyond 316 without moving to super-austenitic grades (such as 254 SMO or AL-625), which are more expensive.

Do not choose 2205 when:

  • The application requires deep forming or complex shaping, duplex is harder to form than austenitic grades and needs more specialised tooling.
  • The service temperature exceeds 300°C, duplex grades can embrittle at elevated temperatures through sigma phase formation.
  • You need maximum toughness at sub-zero temperatures, duplex grades lose toughness in cold environments.

430 Ferritic: The Nickel-Free Option

430 stainless is a ferritic grade with roughly 16–18% chromium and no nickel. It is magnetic, which distinguishes it from the austenitic grades, and it is specified where nickel cost avoidance matters and the environment is moderate.

Choose 430 when:

  • The application is budget-constrained and the environment is moderate; dry indoor use, automotive trim, decorative applications.
  • You need a magnetic stainless for a specific application (430 is magnetic; 304 and 316 are not).
  • Nickel prices are high in your market and the nickel-free cost advantage of 430 is significant.

Do not choose 430 when:

  • The steel will be welded extensively, 430 has poor weldability compared with the austenitic grades.
  • The environment is corrosive; 430 has the lowest corrosion resistance of the four.
  • You need good formability or deep drawing; 430 has lower ductility than the austenitic grades.

This framework covers the majority of applications, but it is not a substitute for a metallurgical review. If the application involves aggressive chemicals, elevated temperatures, cryogenic conditions, cyclic loading or unusual geometries, bring the specification to an engineer before ordering. A technical support call before committing to a grade costs far less than a corroded tank, a failed valve, or a recalled batch of product.
