Every buyer's guide we have ever read starts with the chemistry table and ends with advice about paperwork. This one starts with a question we get asked on almost every call we take at Yuze Metal: what exactly is the difference between wire rod and wire — and which grade should I actually order?
It is a fair question, and a harder one to answer well than it looks. We sell stainless steel wire rod and wire from our facilities in China to customers in Brazil, Europe, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East, and we have learned that the buyer who understands the product beats the buyer who only compares prices. This guide is the version we walk through with customers on video calls and at trade shows — LATAM WIRE + STEEL in São Paulo earlier this month included. It is practical, it has numbers in it, and it will save you from at least one expensive mistake.
First: wire rod and wire are not the same thing
Wire rod is the semi-finished product — a hot-rolled coil of stainless steel, usually 5.5 mm to 12 mm in diameter, coiled into bundles that weigh anywhere from a few hundred kilos to over a tonne. Wire is what you get after the rod has been drawn, annealed, and sometimes coated, down to diameters as small as 0.05 mm. If you draw springs, you buy wire. If you draw the wire yourself, you buy rod. Get that backwards and the whole order goes sideways, because the two are priced, specified, and inspected completely differently.
The confusion is understandable. In many catalogs, "wire rod" and "wire" get lumped together, and end users assume they can substitute one for the other. You cannot. A wire drawing plant buys rod and turns it into wire on its own machines. A spring manufacturer buys finished wire. Before you order anything, decide which side of that line you are on.
The grades that actually matter for wire
Most of the wire rod and wire we sell falls into a handful of grades. The chemistry below is typical composition in weight percent, per the common ASTM grades — real values, the kind a mill test certificate will show:

Two things matter more than the exact numbers. First, the L in 304L and 316L means max 0.03% carbon, which keeps carbide precipitation out of the grain boundaries during welding or heat-affected zones — important for wire that will be welded. Second, the nickel content is what drives most of the price. The 201 grade exists to cut nickel; the trade-off is lower corrosion resistance and different drawing behavior. When a customer asks us for "stainless steel wire" and nothing else, this table is where the conversation begins.
What the numbers mean when you draw it
Composition tells you what the steel is. Mechanical properties tell you what it will do. For drawn wire, the properties buyers care about are tensile strength, elongation, and hardness — and they depend heavily on the temper you specify:

Read those rows as trade-offs, not as rankings. 316L will cost you more and draw a little differently than 304, but it earns its keep in chlorides — coastal, chemical, and food environments. 430 is magnetic, cheaper, and fine indoors, but it will pit in salt. 2205 is the serious-money option for aggressive service, and its price moves with both nickel and molybdenum, so it is volatile. We tell customers not to pay for 2205 to make springs that 304 handles perfectly.
Where each grade shows up
The shortest way to sanity-check a wire order is the application table:

Notice what is missing: nobody sensible draws a spring out of 316L just because it is "better steel." Grade choice is about the specific failure mode the part faces. Salt, chemicals, and heat drive you toward molybdenum-bearing grades. Cost pressure and volume drive you toward 304 and 201. Plain indoor duty often tolerates 430. Get that logic right and the rest of the specification is mostly detail.
The details that trip buyers up
Once the grade and temper are right, the remaining specification is where orders go wrong — and where an experienced supplier earns its money.
Surface condition. Wire rod comes hot-rolled, and depending on the route it may be pickled (to remove scale), annealed, or coated with lime or borax to help drawing. Ask what the surface condition is before you design your process around it. A coil that is perfect for direct drawing may be wrong if you need bright-annealed wire instead.
Diameter tolerance. A standard wire spec has a nominal diameter and a tolerance band. If your die is set for 2.00 mm and the wire lands at 2.05 mm, you will feel it in the machine. Confirm the tolerance class in writing; "standard" means different things to different mills.
Coil weight and packaging. This is the one buyers forget, and it is the one that bites in international trade. A container ship trip to Santos or Rotterdam is hard on coils. Moisture condenses inside the container, and rust spots on stainless wire rod are a classic import complaint. Ask your supplier how the coil is protected — steel banding, polyethylene wrap, moisture bags, desiccant — and check the coil weight against your own handling equipment. We have lost count of customers who ordered a coil their forklift cannot lift.
Certificates. For wire rod and wire, ask for the mill test certificate with the heat number, chemical analysis, and mechanical properties before you commit. If a supplier hesitates on the certificate, that is the answer you need.
Buying from a supplier who actually ships the stuff
This is where we stop being a neutral guide and start being blunt, because it is the part that protects you. When you buy wire rod or wire from an overseas supplier, you are buying a promise about chemistry, tolerance, and packaging — and the distance makes verification harder. A supplier who asks you about your drawing process, your die sizes, and your end application is not being nosy; they are trying to ship you something that works. A supplier who only quotes price is telling you how the relationship will go.
