The Standard Behind the Grade
Every stainless steel order carries a standard that defines the chemistry and mechanical properties of the material. The grade name 304, 316, or 2205 is recognised everywhere; the standard number beside it is regional. Knowing which standard applies is what lets you compare material from different mills, countries, and supply chains on the same basis.
The grade says what you are buying. The standard says how that product is defined, tested, and certified. Most disputes between buyers and suppliers trace back to a gap between those two sentences: the buyer assumed one standard, the mill produced to another, and both were "correct".
The Common International Standards
Different regions and product forms use different standards, but the underlying chemistry is essentially the same.

For international procurement, the key point is that the grade name 304 is global, the standard number is regional, and the chemistry is the same. Read that sentence again the next time a cross-border quote looks "too cheap" or "too expensive" against a domestic one; more often than not, the comparison is between two standards rather than two prices.
One caution: the standards cover more than chemistry. Tolerances on thickness, surface, and flatness, test frequency, and certification scope can differ between ASTM and EN documents. A buyer who specifies "304 to ASTM A240" and receives "304 to GB/T 3280" usually gets the right chemistry — but should still confirm the mechanical and dimensional requirements of their application are met.
Importing 304 From China
When you buy 304 plate from China, the mill test certificate references GB/T 3280, instead of ASTM A240. That does not mean the chemistry is different. Chinese 304 falls within the same composition limits as ASTM 304, within normal tolerance.
The practical requirement for importers is to verify the standard named on the mill test certificate and confirm that the actual chemical composition falls within the ASTM or EN limits for the grade you are buying. That confirmation step is what keeps a product that is "304 by name" from being something else in service.
A concrete version of this check: you receive a quote for 3 mm 304 sheet at a price well below your domestic supplier. The chemistry on the certificate comes back within ASTM limits, carbon 0.05%, chromium 18.2%, nickel 8.1%. On composition alone, the material is 304. What the certificate cannot tell you — and what the receiving inspection should — is whether the thickness tolerance, flatness, and surface condition match what your fabrication process assumes. Those properties are standard-dependent, and the standard on the certificate is the one that governs them.
Order note: Put the acceptance standard in the purchase order, not the inquiry. "304, EN 10088-2, with MTC" closes the ambiguity before the mill cuts steel; after delivery it is an argument, not a specification.
How to Read a Mill Test Certificate
A complete mill test certificate shows the grade, the applicable standard, the actual chemical composition, the mechanical test results, and the heat number for traceability. If any of those elements are missing, the document is not a complete certificate; it is a sales description.
Each element catches a different failure. The grade and standard confirm you received what you ordered. The actual composition — not the nominal composition — is what you compare against the specification limits, element by element. The mechanical results tell you the heat was tested, not assumed. The heat number ties the certificate to the physical material; if a plate's stamped heat number does not match the certificate, stop and ask before cutting it.
Require the certificate with every order and review it before payment. The certificate is your evidence that the delivered material matches the specification. Review before payment also changes the supplier's behaviour: mills that know certificates are checked send the right ones the first time.
A grade name with a standard and a verified certificate is a product you can rely on. A grade name without either is a marketing label.
Before You Send the Next RFQ
- Name the acceptance standard explicitly — "304 to ASTM A240" or "EN 10088-2" — and require the MTC to reference it.
- Ask for a sample certificate from a recent heat before awarding the order; it tells you more than three rounds of price negotiation.
- Check the heat number physically on delivery, at least on a sampling basis, and file certificates against heat numbers so claims can be made years later.
- When comparing quotes across countries, compare the standard, the certificate scope, and the tolerances — then the price.

Standards do not end the conversation; they start it with a shared vocabulary. The grade name on a certificate, the number on a drawing and the clause in a purchase order have to point at the same document, or the cheapest-looking quotation becomes the most expensive one at inspection. When in doubt, ask which standard the supplier is actually certifying to, and ask them to write it down. A supplier who answers with a number and a year has done this before.
