What Makes Duplex Stainless Different
Duplex stainless steel combines roughly 50% austenite and 50% ferrite in a mixed microstructure. That dual-phase structure is the source of its strength: it pairs the high strength of ferritic grades with the corrosion resistance of austenitic grades. In many applications it outperforms 304 or 316 on both strength and corrosion at a similar or lower cost per kilogram.
The flagship grade is 2205, the most widely used duplex grade across oil and gas, desalination, chemical processing and marine engineering.
If you have never bought duplex before, the honest summary is this: it is not a more exotic 316. It is a different trade — more strength per millimetre and more chloride resistance per dollar, in exchange for a fabrication process that needs more control.

A yield strength of 450 MPa vs 215 MPa means duplex carries roughly double the load at the same thickness. A PREN of 37.5 vs 18 means far better pitting resistance in chloride environments. The tensile strength of 780 MPa vs 515 MPa leaves more margin for pressure and impact.
Designers rarely use all of that headroom for strength alone, and they should not. The standard trick is to keep the same corrosion allowance and take part of the gain in thinner walls: a pressure vessel or a pipe class that would need 8 mm in 316 can often be engineered at a lower thickness in 2205, and the weight saving compounds across a structure. Less weight means smaller supports, cheaper lifting, easier transport — savings that never appear on the per-tonne steel price but always appear on the installed cost.
The Duplex Grade Family
Duplex is a family, instead of a single grade. The right member depends on how aggressive the environment is.
- 2205: standard duplex, PREN ~37.5, the most widely used grade.
- 2304: lean duplex, PREN ~32, lower cost for less aggressive service.
- 2507: super-duplex, PREN ~44, for seawater, sour gas and highly corrosive chemicals.
- 253MA: super-duplex, PREN ~41, good toughness for high-temperature and marine use.
PREN is your quick screening tool. Higher always means better chloride service, and 2205 at ~37.5 is a large step up from 316 at ~25.
The family structure rewards buying discipline. The most expensive duplex mistake in reverse is over-buying: specifying 2507 — a super-duplex built for seawater injection lines and sour gas — for a brackish water line that 2205 handles comfortably. The premium is real, and it buys resistance the service will never use.
Where Duplex Earns Its Place
Duplex is the material of choice in offshore oil and gas, desalination plants, chemical processing, pulp and paper, marine structures and waste treatment. These are environments where 304 fails quickly and 316 wears out faster than the project lifecycle.
In a desalination plant, 2205 or 2507 piping survives constant seawater and chlorinated cleaning cycles that pit out 316 within a few years. On offshore platforms, the higher strength lets engineers reduce wall thickness and weight, a real saving when lifting tonnes of equipment onto a rig.
Paper mills offer the same story one step removed. White water systems carry chlorides and temperature together, the combination that eats austenitic grades from the inside; duplex digesters and piping have quietly replaced whole sections of 316 plant that were being rebuilt every shutdown.
Waste treatment is the unglamorous end of the same logic. Municipal clarifiers, screw conveyors and sludge handling see wet, chloride-bearing, abrasive service, and the specifiers who moved to lean duplex grades there did so because the maintenance schedule, not the brochure, demanded it.
Duplex as a Value Grade
Duplex is not a premium grade; it is a value grade when used correctly. Higher strength translates into thinner sections, lighter structures and lower installed cost, even when the raw price per tonne is higher.
The caveats are real: duplex is harder to weld, more sensitive to temperature (service above 300C degrades the microstructure) and needs controlled fabrication. But for the right application it is the most cost-effective stainless available.
The fabrication caveat deserves one paragraph of its own, because it is where duplex projects run over budget. Duplex welding needs balanced filler (2209 for 2205), controlled heat input and interpass temperatures, and a welder who has actually run the grade. A shop that treats 2205 like 316 can produce welds that pass visual inspection and quietly lose the phase balance that gives duplex its properties. Ask your fabricator about their duplex procedure qualification before you award the job, not after the first weld cracks.
Before you reach for 316 or an exotic grade, ask whether duplex delivers the strength and corrosion resistance you need at a lower lifecycle cost.
Before You Send the Next RFQ
- Write the service conditions — chloride level, temperature range, pressure — into the RFQ, and let the supplier propose between 2304, 2205 and 2507 rather than naming the grade first.
- Ask for PREN and phase balance data with the quote, and an MTC against it on delivery.
- Confirm your fabricator holds a qualified duplex welding procedure before fabrication starts.
- Price the job as installed cost — material, weight, welding, maintenance intervals — not as steel tonnage.
That last line is how duplex wins its jobs.
