  • Check whether long-term contracts include cost-pass-through clauses.

An annual agreement that passes through "alloy adjustments" without defining the reference index and the revision date hands the mill a free option on your margin. When 316 quotations rise, ask whether molybdenum is the driver; when duplex availability tightens, check raw material availability rather than just finished steel stock. Stress-test project budgets for a $5–$10 per kg molybdenum movement and compare landed cost across suppliers who use different cost assumptions.

Order note: before signing a multi-quarter 316 or duplex contract, ask the supplier to state the surcharge formula in writing — index, reference period, and revision frequency. If they cannot, price that uncertainty into your own offer.
