LME Nickel Rebounds to $15,714: What It Means for Stainless Steel Buyers

Quick Summary

LME nickel closed at 15,714 USD per tonne on Monday 5 October 2026, +88 USD on the session, with official LME stocks at 284,970 tonnes. The rebound is real but capped by heavy inventory, so stainless steel buyers should use October to fix surcharge basis and quote validity rather than chase prices.

The 5 October session, line by line

Yieh Phua reported the move on 6 October 2026: cash nickel settled at 15,714 USD per tonne, 88 USD above the previous session, while the LME three-month settlement reached 15,524 USD per tonne, up 86 USD. Both lines rose by close to the same amount, so this reads as a broad repricing of the metal rather than a squeeze on a single contract. Intraday trading spanned 15,540 to 15,750 USD per tonne, and the close landed in the upper half of that band.

Two forces ran at the same time. Manufacturing readings for China, the United States and the euro zone came in firm enough to lift base metals, and nickel travelled with the group. The counterweight was a strong US dollar plus the size of exchange inventories, which is why a supportive demand headline produced an 88 USD step instead of a breakout.

What caps this rebound: inventory first

Official LME stocks read 284,970 tonnes on 5 October 2026 after a 198-tonne draw on the day. The daily change is minor, the level is not. On-warrant nickel stood near 278,898 tonnes on 24 September 2026 and about 264,444 tonnes at the August low, so the exchange has absorbed roughly 20,000 tonnes of extra available metal in about six weeks while prices were drifting lower. Against the same month a year ago, stocks remain high.

That background changes how a rally behaves. Consumers with near-term coverage can wait a move out, traders who bought lower take profit, and the bounce fades without fresh restocking. For a procurement team the reading is simple: upside exists, but it has a roof, and one strong session does not clear a stock overhang that is high by year-on-year standards.

Supply sits on the same ledger. Philippine shipments of Indonesian nickel ore have recovered after the seasonal lull, which keeps ore flowing into Indonesian converters. Indonesia's RKAB quota still sits below the roughly 315 million tonnes per year that full production would require, so mined supply stays administered rather than open-ended. At Morowali, a water shortage has constrained about 100,000 tonnes per year of NPI capacity across two phases. The mix points both ways: recovered ore shipments and heavy stocks cap rallies, while the RKAB ceiling and the Morowali curbs stop producers from flooding the market if demand returns. That combination fits an inventory-heavy market better than a shortage story, and it is why the base case for the rest of October is a range rather than a run.

Where nickel sat before the bounce

TradingEconomics put nickel at roughly 15,905 USD per tonne around 1 October 2026, about 5.86 per cent below a month earlier and roughly 4.23 per cent above a year earlier. Measured against that reference, the 5 October close of 15,714 USD per tonne still sits below the level where October opened, so the rebound repairs part of the September decline instead of starting a fresh leg higher.

The year-on-year figure matters for contracts. A market up more than four per cent over twelve months keeps mill surcharge formulas from resetting downward in a single step, even when the monthly direction points lower. Buyers should expect a lag of several weeks between a move on the LME board and a change in the surcharge printed on a proforma invoice.

What it means for 304 and 316L surcharges

Nickel dominates the cost of austenitic grades, and the alloy surcharge follows the LME monthly average rather than yesterday's screen price. Because October's average is set across the whole month, one session of +88 USD shifts very little until the average has climbed for two or three weeks. A supplier quoting from the September average already works from a softer base; a supplier adjusting prices in the third week of October is catching up to a market that has stopped falling.

For a 304 stainless steel welded pipe order, ask which month's average the surcharge references and on what date the quote expires. For a 2205 duplex stainless steel plate enquiry, request nickel and molybdenum as separate lines, because duplex pricing does not track 304 one for one. Our earlier note on the nickel price swing and the stainless steel alloy surcharge sets out the transmission mechanism, and October quotes follow that same path. Yuze Metal writes the 304 and 316L alloy surcharge basis into the quotation itself, so the number can be audited against the LME monthly average once the month closes.

Work with Yuze Metal

Yuze Metal Limited was founded in 2012 in Wuxi, China, and exports stainless steel and aluminum products to more than 60 countries, with annual supply above 300,000 tonnes and a mill test certificate (MTC) attached to every shipment. On nickel-linked grades, the 304 and 316L alloy surcharge basis is stated in the quotation and reconciled against the LME monthly average, so buyers verify the figure instead of accepting it. Four moves to lock October pricing

  1. Ask each supplier to separate base price from alloy surcharge, and to name the LME month used for the calculation.
  2. Hold quote validity at 10 to 15 days while stocks stay above 280,000 tonnes, so an offer cannot drift away from the board.
  3. For duplex and high-moly orders, confirm the nickel and molybdenum components independently; 2205 does not move in step with 304.
  4. Fix the October volume you genuinely need and ask for a monthly average settlement instead of per-shipment repricing, which removes the noise that comes with an 88 USD session.
