LME Nickel Settles Near $16,200: What Mid-September Prices Mean for Stainless Steel Buyers

Quick Summary
LME nickel cash settled at roughly $16,200 per tonne on 14 September 2026, with the three-month contract quoted near $16,400. For 304 and 316L buyers, alloy surcharges are holding flat-to-softer into late September — this is a window for quote discipline, not panic buying.

Where nickel stands in mid-September
Nickel has drifted lower through the summer without breaking down. The official LME price table for 14 September 2026 puts cash settlement at $16,200–16,205/t and the three-month contract at $16,380–16,400/t. Compare that with the July 2026 global monthly average of about $16,632/t and the picture is clear: a soft, grinding decline of a few percent, not a collapse.
| Reference point | Price | Date |
|---|---|---|
| LME cash settlement | ~$16,200/t | 14 Sept 2026 |
| LME 3-month official | ~$16,380/t | 14 Sept 2026 |
| July 2026 monthly average | ~$16,632/t | FRED global series |
| SHFE main contract | ~128,180 yuan/t | 7–8 Sept 2026 |
| Yangtze spot 1# nickel | 128,000 yuan/t (−600) | 8 Sept 2026 |
The Shanghai market tells the same story from a different angle. The main NI2610 contract was expected to range-trade around 129,000–130,000 yuan/t at the start of the month, then slipped below that band — trading near 128,000 yuan/t in the second week. Domestic spot 1# nickel averaged 128,000 yuan/t on the Yangtze market on 8 September, down 600 yuan on the day.
What this means for 304 and 316L quotes
Nickel is the single biggest cost driver in austenitic grades, so this mid-range price has a direct consequence: mill surcharges are not spiking. If your supplier quotes include a nickel surcharge clause, expect the surcharge component to stay flat or edge down slightly over the next few weeks, not jump.
Two practical notes:
- Read the surcharge formula, not just the base price. When 304 stainless steel cold rolled plate is quoted, the split between base price and nickel surcharge determines how much your invoice moves with LME. Ask for the split in writing.
- 316L buyers get less relief than 304 buyers. Molybdenum is the swing factor for 316L stainless steel plate, and molybdenum has been running its own cycle. Do not assume a flat nickel price means a flat 316L price.
We covered the mechanics in more detail in our August piece on nickel pulling back and stainless cost pressure — the structure of the market has not changed since then.
China spot stainless: stable, with thin demand underneath
Domestic spot stainless has been steady to slightly softer while futures hover. Early September data put the average spot stainless price around 15,287.5 yuan/t on 1 September, with the spot-futures basis near +1,400 yuan — spot is trading at a premium to the board, and warehouse receipts stood near 77,342 tonnes. That combination usually means mills and traders are willing to hold offers rather than chase volume.
When spot trades at a premium to futures and inventory is workable, mills have little reason to discount. Buyers waiting for a dramatic September clearance are usually disappointed.
Demand is the constraint. End-user orders are arriving just-in-time rather than in bulk, which keeps transaction volumes modest even where offer prices hold. This is a familiar pattern for this point in the year.
Late-September watch items
- Indonesian supply policy. More than half of global mined nickel originates in Indonesia, and every permit or quota review there moves the price. Quota tightening is the reason 2026 averages sit above 2025 despite soft demand.
- Mill maintenance wrap-up. Chinese stainless mills have been cycling through maintenance; as capacity returns, mill offers may firm slightly even with nickel flat.
- Currency. A weaker yuan raises the yuan-denominated import cost of LME-priced nickel, partially offsetting dollar-side softness for Chinese buyers.
None of these argues for a breakout move by the end of the month. The base case is a 125,000–130,000 yuan/t range on SHFE and a $16,000–16,500 band on LME cash.
A checklist for procurement teams placing orders this week
- Ask each supplier to state base price and nickel surcharge separately, with the LME settlement date the surcharge references.
- Fix validity periods at 10–15 days rather than 30, so quotes stay honest against the board.
- For 316L and higher-moly grades, confirm the molybdenum component separately.
- If your volume justifies it, request a quarterly averaging arrangement instead of per-order surcharges — it smooths the noise that comes with a $16,000s market.
- Compare at least two offers per grade before booking; in a flat market, spread between offers is mostly service and stock position, not cost.
