LME Aluminium Holds Above $3,200: What Late-September Strength Means for Aluminum Buyers

The late-September numbers, in one table
| Reference point | Value | Date |
|---|---|---|
| LME cash settlement | $3,254/t | 25 Sept 2026 |
| LME 3-month official | $3,267/t | 25 Sept 2026 |
| LME stocks | ~241,375 t | 25 Sept 2026 |
| Cash one day earlier | $3,228/t | 24 Sept 2026 |
| Duty-paid Rotterdam premium | $535–560/t | 24 Sept 2026 |
| Rotterdam premium one week earlier | $505–525/t | ~17 Sept 2026 |
The shape of the year matters for context: LME cash touched roughly $3,700 during the spring, and the market has spent the autumn rebuilding strength in the $3,200s. Aluminium closed the week of 25 September up about 1.8% on the month.
Why the market keeps finding support
Three forces have held aluminium up through 2026, and none of them has gone away:
- Tight exchange inventory. LME stocks spent part of the year at levels not seen since the early 1990s — a fact confirmed when Reuters reported stocks hitting a 36-year low in August. Even the current ~241,000 t is thin by historical standards; it represents a handful of days of global consumption.
- Energy-cost discipline on the supply side. Smelting is electricity-intensive, and capacity additions in Europe have been slow to restart at current power prices. Production growth comes mainly from regions with new capacity, and it lags demand.
- Physical premiums firming. The duty-paid Rotterdam premium — what European buyers actually pay on top of LME — moved from $505–525/t in mid-September to $535–560/t a week later. Premiums rising while the board rises means the physical market is tight, not just the paper market.
When the premium rises together with the LME price, the move is demand- and inventory-driven, not a financial fluke. Those are the price moves that stick.
What this does to quotes for mill products
Mill products — sheet, plate, extrusions — are priced as LME plus conversion, plus alloy and freight components. A $3,250 LME does not change the conversion cost, but it resets the whole quote level:
- Every re-quote in October starts higher than a September quote of the same spec, by roughly the LME move plus any premium drift.
- Fixed-price offers get shorter validity. Where 30-day validity was common, 10–15 days becomes the norm when the underlying is this volatile.
- Alloy surcharges on specialty products (like 7005 or 7075 plate) inherit the same drift.
For buyers of commodity grades — 5052 aluminum alloy sheet or 1060 pure aluminum sheet — the practical impact is a few percent per order, which compounds across a year's volume.
What procurement teams should do in Q4
- Book volume you know you need before year-end. With premiums firm and stocks thin, the risk in Q4 is asymmetric: prices are more likely to drift up than to gift buyers a correction.
- Split the quote into components. Ask suppliers to state LME basis date, premium component and conversion separately — then you can see whether a price change is market or margin.
- Consider hedged or averaged pricing for large programs. A quarterly average of LME settlements smooths the weekly noise and makes budgeting defensible.
- Watch premiums, not just the board. The Rotterdam duty-paid premium is the best weekly signal of physical tightness in Europe; the CIF/Asian premiums do the same job for Asian buyers.
- For wide plate and custom tempers, extend lead-time assumptions. Mill conversion capacity does not expand in a quarter, and tight-metal markets always lengthen queues first.
A note on how "LME basis" actually works in your quote
Most mill-product buyers encounter the LME only as a line item, so a brief mechanics recap is useful when prices run like this:
- The LME basis date is the settlement day (or averaging window) the supplier used to convert metal into your quote. Ask for it in writing; without it, two quotes can differ purely by which day's price they embedded.
- The premium component covers logistics and regional availability — Rotterdam duty-paid for Europe, CIF terms elsewhere. It moves independently of the board and, in tight markets, moves more.
- The conversion cost is the supplier's processing margin: casting, rolling, extrusion, finishing. It only changes when energy or capacity conditions change.
When aluminium re-priced from the $3,228 (24 Sept) to $3,254 (25 Sept), a buyer with a 20-tonne sheet order saw roughly $500 of metal value move on the metal component alone — small per order, material across a year.
The comparison buyers should keep in mind
Aluminium at $3,254 sits in a very different place from nickel. Nickel in the $16,000s is drifting within a comfortable band; aluminium is pushing against historically elevated levels with shrinking inventories behind it. When we compare the two boards with stainless buyers, the advice diverges accordingly — nickel-driven grades reward patience this autumn, aluminum grades reward decisiveness.
For alloys where the two compete — automotive panels, heat exchanger fins, trailer bodies — the aluminum option's price advantage narrows when LME runs like this. It is worth re-running the weight-and-cost comparison before locking a design.
