Choose 7075 when strength-to-weight is the design driver and the part will not be welded — it is the aerospace-grade aluminum (Al-Zn-Mg-Cu, T6 temper, tensile ~570 MPa) that nearly doubles 6061's strength but is difficult to weld and costs roughly 1.5–2× more.

Both are heat-treatable alloys sold as plate in the Chinese export market, and mis-selection runs in both directions: over-specifying 7075 for welded frames that 6061 would have served cheaper and better, and under-specifying 6061 into high-stress brackets that needed 7075's strength. This guide separates them by the decisions that drive the choice.

Strength: What the Numbers Mean for Real Parts

7075-T6's ~570 MPa tensile strength sits in the range of mild structural steel — which is why it dominates aerospace fittings, high-load brackets and performance hardware. Per kilogram of weight it outperforms steel, and that strength-to-weight ratio is the entire reason to pay its premium.

But the strength comparison misleads buyers who stop reading there. Most industrial aluminum parts are not strength-limited at 6061's level: a welded equipment frame, a machine base, a robot arm structure fails in design terms far before 6061-T6's ~275 MPa yield becomes the constraint. For those parts, 7075's extra strength is dead weight in cost terms — and 7075 brings real liabilities into a welded design (next section). The correct question is not "which is stronger" but "does my part need more than 6061's strength, and do I need to weld it?"

The Welding Difference Is Decisive

6061 welds reliably with standard TIG/MIG practice and 4043 or 5356 filler; the weld zone loses some strength (the heat-affected zone drops to roughly half of T6 strength), but the joint remains sound and design practice accounts for it.

7075 is a different story. Its zinc-copper chemistry makes it crack-prone during welding — hot cracking in the weld metal and HAZ liquation cracking are well-documented failure modes. Standard practice for 7075 is: do not fusion-weld it. Where 7075 assemblies need joining, the industry uses mechanical fasteners or adhesive bonding. A buyer whose drawings show welds on a "7075" part should treat that as a design-review flag before ordering either alloy.

Corrosion and Service Environment

6061's Al-Mg-Si chemistry resists atmospheric and many marine-adjacent environments acceptably; it is the default for outdoor structures and can be anodized for further protection with predictable results.

7075's copper content is what gives it strength — and simultaneously lowers its corrosion resistance. In aggressive environments it is often used as clad plate (a pure-aluminum layer bonded over the core) or with protective coatings. For anodizing, 7075 takes clear coats fine but is notorious for poor color matching — its copper content darkens and muddles dyed finishes. Architectural or cosmetic anodized parts are 6061 territory.

Machining and Surface Notes

For CNC-machined components, 7075-T6 is the premium choice: it machines cleanly at high removal rates with excellent chip-breaking, and dimensional stability through machining is superb — one reason mold bases and aerospace fittings specify it. 6061-T6 also machines well and is the correct choice when the part then needs welding or anodizing.

Both plates are supplied in the Chinese export market in T4/T6/T651 tempers (stress-relieved variants like T651 matter for parts that will see heavy machining — they reduce residual-stress movement). Selection Checklist

  1. Does the design include welds? Yes → 6061 (or redesign the joint). This alone settles most cases.
  2. Does the part need more than ~275 MPa yield? No → 6061. Yes → 7075.
  3. Is it a heavily machined, high-stress part (fittings, molds, aerospace)? → 7075-T651.
  4. Cosmetic anodizing in specific colors? → 6061.
  5. Budget-constrained general fabrication? → 6061, every time.

The two alloys are complements, not competitors — most machine shops and fabricators stock both, and the marks of an experienced buyer are knowing which line the part walks and stating the temper (T6 vs T651) explicitly on the purchase order.
