Pipe is the visible half of a piping system. The invisible half — elbows, tees, reducers, flanges, gaskets, fasteners — is where GCC projects usually bleed schedule: the pipe arrives from the mill on time, and the fittings trail behind because nobody ordered them against the same specification. This guide covers how the components fit together and what to verify, whether you buy the package from one source or split it.

The material match is the part buyers miss most often: 316L stainless steel pipe joined with 304 flanges creates a corrosion seam exactly at the weld — the weakest component sets the system's grade, not the strongest.

Where Fittings Fail in the Field

Inspection records read the same way project after project, and the failures are rarely exotic:

  1. Class mismatches at assembly — a 300-class flange bolted to a 150-class valve; the bolt pattern fits, the pressure rating does not. The line class sheet prevents it; nobody carried it to the fittings order.
  2. Gasket seating on the wrong facing — raised face versus flat face, serration depth ignored, and the joint weeps at test.
  3. Fastener material drift — A193 B7 carbon studs on stainless flanges rust, seize and turn maintenance into a cutting job.
  4. Substituted schedules — Sch 40 delivered against a Sch 80 line because it was on the shelf.
  5. Missing heat traceability — no certificate means no way to prove what the fitting is when the engineer asks.

Every one of these is preventable with a purchase order that states grade, class, schedule, size and certificate terms as one line.

Pressure Class: The Number That Changes Everything

Flanges carry a pressure class (150, 300, 600...) that determines wall thickness, bolt pattern and gasket seating. Two "DN100 flanges" can differ by a factor of three in weight and price depending on class. The project's line class documentation fixes the class — quote against it explicitly, and treat any supplier who leaves the class off the proforma as pricing an assumption.

The same discipline applies to fittings: a Sch 40 elbow and a Sch 80 elbow look identical in a photograph. Schedule and size must appear on the quote line, the delivery ticket and the certificate.

Certificates: Same Rules as Pipe

Fittings and flanges need EN 10204 3.1 certificates per heat, with chemistry matching the grade you specified:

  • Flanges — ASTM A182 F304/F316L covers forged stainless flanges; the F-prefix grades are the fitting-world twins of the F-free pipe grades
  • Butt-weld fittings — made from the same plate or seamless equivalents; the certificate should state the base material standard
  • Fasteners — ASTM A193 B8M (316) studs with A194 8M nuts for stainless systems; mixing carbon-steel B7 studs into a stainless flange set is a galvanic and maintenance problem

Sourcing the Package: One Source or Split?

Split sourcing (pipe from the mill, fittings from local stock) is common in the GCC because stockists carry fast-moving fitting sizes. The trade-offs:

  1. Single source — one certificate chain, one party accountable for grade matching, cleaner claims handling
  2. Split sourcing — faster local availability for standard fittings, but you own the grade-match and class-match risk between the two supply chains
  3. Hybrid — pipe and project fittings from the mill export route; emergency spares from local stock

Whichever route, the purchase order should name the pipe specification the fittings must match. That single line prevents the 304-on-316L mistake better than any inspection.
