The three acronyms get thrown around interchangeably in inquiries, and that is where wrong orders start. They describe two different decisions: what the substrate coating is (zinc vs aluminum-zinc) and whether a paint system sits on top. Here is the map.

Our galvanized coil runs zinc coatings of 60–275 g/m² (both sides) on a DX51D / Q195 base — the coating weight is the dial that sets how long the zinc lasts. Prepaint adds the paint layer: our PPGI coil carries polyester or SMP systems at 25–60 µm top and 25–30 µm back, in custom RAL colors.

Paint Systems: PE, SMP, PVDF

The paint is half the product, and the three systems are not equals:

  1. PE (polyester) — the workhorse: good color retention and flexibility at the lowest price. Standard for walls and interiors.
  2. SMP (silicone-modified polyester) — harder and more weather-resistant than PE; the middle step for roofs that need more than PE but not premium pricing. Our PPGL SMP coil is the standard-roofing variant.
  3. PVDF (fluorocarbon, ≥70% PVDF) — the long-life system: best color and chalk resistance for aggressive sun and coastal air. The premium option on our PPGL PVDF coil.

A practical rule from the field: match the paint system to the environment's sun and salt load first, then match the substrate to the panel's structural and cut-edge needs.

Cut Edges and Fastener Holes: Where Coils Meet Reality

The coated system is thickest where the panel is flat and thinnest where you work on it — cut edges, drilled holes and folded corners. How those spots age decides whether the cladding looks good at year ten:

  1. Cut edges — galvalume substrates slow edge creep dramatically compared to plain galvanized; spec the substrate by the edge exposure, not just the flat price.
  2. Fastener choice — matched-color cap screws with EPDM sealing washers outperform bare self-drillers; the washer seals the hole the drill just opened.
  3. Touch-up kits — order touch-up paint with the coil, in the same RAL and system; site-mixed paint peels.
  4. Roll-forming before painting vs after — post-forming a painted sheet cracks the coating at the bend radius; profiles should be roll-formed from coil, not bent from pre-painted flat sheet.

These four details separate installations that still look new at inspection from the ones that generate repaint budgets — and none of them show up in a per-kilogram price comparison.

Substrate: Why Galvalume Exists

Zinc protects sacrificially — it corrodes in place of the steel, which is superb where the coating gets scratched. The aluminum-zinc (galvalume) coating protects more by barrier: it corrodes much more slowly, at the cost of less sacrificial margin at cut edges. In practice, galvalume substrates outlast zinc substrates in hot and coastal climates, which is why PPGL became the default for roofing in the Gulf and Southeast Asia, while PPGI holds the wall and appliance market where cost and forming matter more. One more substrate variant worth knowing: the stone-chip coated PPGI line bonds natural stone granules onto the painted galvanized base — the roofing product that looks like clay tiles with steel's weight advantage.

Comparing Quotes Without Mixing Categories

The classic mistake is comparing a PPGL PVDF quote against a PPGI PE quote and picking the cheaper one — they are different products wearing the same acronym family. Force every quote to state:

  1. Substrate: galvanized (zinc weight in g/m²) or galvalume (aluminum-zinc class)
  2. Paint system: PE, SMP or PVDF, with top-coat thickness in microns
  3. Both-side coating: top thickness and back thickness separately
  4. Color: RAL code or custom, and gloss level
