Gauge numbering survives because the US market grew up with it, but it trips up everyone else: the bigger the number, the thinner the sheet, and the steps are not even. Below 24 gauge, handling damage starts to matter more than the material cost; above 10 gauge you are really in plate territory, where sizes and tolerances follow different rules.
Millimetres First: How International Buyers Should Specify
Outside North America, sheet is ordered in millimetres — and even gauge-native buyers confirm mm values on drawings. When you specify, state:
- Thickness in mm with the tolerance class (for example 1.5 mm ± 0.08)
- Grade and standard — ASTM A240 304 or 316L, EN 1.4301 / 1.4404
- Finish — 2B (the standard mill finish), BA (bright annealed), No.1 (hot rolled, annealed), 8K mirror, HL (hairline)
- Width and length — mill-standard sheets run 1000–2000 mm wide and up to 6000 mm long; anything outside standard sizes is a cutting job, priced accordingly
A line like "304, 2B, 1.5 × 1219 × 2438 mm, ASTM A240" contains everything a mill or distributor needs; "20 gauge 304 sheet" contains half of it.
Finishes: The Other Half of the Specification
Two sheets of the same grade and thickness can look — and price — completely different. The finish names are worth knowing by heart:
- 2B — the standard cold-rolled mill finish: smooth, dull grey, ready for most fabrication. The default unless you say otherwise.
- BA — bright annealed: reflective and smoother than 2B, common in appliances and visible interiors.
- No.1 — hot-rolled, annealed and pickled: rougher scaled surface for plate-thickness industrial use.
- 8K mirror — polished to a true mirror for architectural and decorative work.
- HL (hairline) — brushed linear grain, the elevator and appliance favourite.
Decorative finishes (8K, HL) are polished products, not mill defaults — they carry a polishing premium and usually need protective film for transport. Ordering "2B" when you meant HL is a cheaper mistake than the reverse, but both cost a re-order.
What the Mill Actually Produces
Cold-rolled stainless sheet (the 2B and BA world) commonly runs 0.3–3.0 mm; hot-rolled plate — sold as No.1 finish — starts around 3 mm and goes up. The 304 stainless steel cold rolled plate we stock runs 1000–2000 mm wide and 1000–6000 mm long in 2B/BA, which covers the standard sheet program; decorative work has its own lane, like the 304 mirror sheet in 8K finish.
One practical note: thickness tolerance is asymmetric on cold-rolled sheet — the allowable undersize is typically tighter than the oversize, because undersize hurts the customer's forming process. If your application is deep drawing or critical weight, say so; tolerance class is negotiable and priced accordingly.
Standard Sheet Sizes Around the World
The "standard size" question has three answers depending on where the sheet was rolled:
- North America: 48 × 120 inches (1219 × 3048 mm) and 48 × 96 inches (1219 × 2438 mm)
- China / most of Asia: 1219 × 2438 mm and 1000 × 2000 mm as the common mill formats, with 1219 × 3048 mm and 1500 × 3000 mm on wider mills
- Europe: 1000 × 2000 mm, 1250 × 2500 mm and 1500 × 3000 mm
Buying mill-standard sizes avoids cutting waste and trims price; a "custom" 1100 × 2900 mm sheet is really a standard sheet plus a cutting line, billed as two operations. When your program runs hundreds of sheets, matching the mill format is one of the few free savings left in the trade.
Gauge, Weight and Cost: How They Connect
Weight per sheet scales linearly with thickness — a useful cross-check when a quote arrives:

If a "3.0 mm" sheet arrives noticeably lighter than the arithmetic says, the gauge chart above will tell you what actually showed up. Density of 304/316L is 8.0 g/cm³ — carbon steel is 7.85, close enough for rule-of-thumb but not for invoicing.
