A stainless steel finish is not a coating and it is not a decoration. It is the physical condition of the surface left by the rolling and processing steps — and it determines three things that matter to you: how the material looks, how it performs in service, and, often, how much it costs.

The way to think about it is in two layers. First, the finish carries the mill's rolling texture — the pattern of rollers and passes that shaped the sheet or coil. Second, on top of that, a secondary process can change the surface further: grinding, polishing, brushing, or bright annealing. The combination of those two produces the finish codes you see on a spec sheet.

The two finishes that cover most orders

2B is the workhorse. It is the default finish for sheet and coil, and it gets its smooth, matte surface from a final light cold-rolling pass followed by annealing and pickling. It has a mild reflectivity, is easy to clean, and carries a reasonable price. For anything where the surface is not a visible feature — tanks, process equipment, most structural work — 2B is the sensible default. The catch is that its reflectivity is directional and uneven under some lighting, which matters only if the surface will be seen.

No. 4 is the finished look. It starts from a 2B or 2D base, then gets mechanically polished with a belt to produce a brushed, directional grain. It is the finish you see on commercial kitchen equipment, handrails, and medical furniture. It looks deliberate and hides fingerprints and small scratches far better than a mirror finish does. The trade-off is cost: No. 4 is a secondary process, so it carries a premium and a longer lead time.

The finishes people overpay for

A few finishes get ordered because they sound impressive, not because they are needed. Being clear about this can save you money.

Mirror and No. 8 finishes are for appearance, not performance. A true mirror finish adds cost, lead time, and — in many environments — maintenance, because it shows every fingerprint and smudge. If the application is decorative and the surface is protected, fine. If it is structural or industrial, a mirror finish is usually money spent on nothing.

Bright annealed (BA) is a niche, not a default. BA is produced by annealing in a controlled atmosphere that preserves a bright surface, so it skips the pickling step. It looks great and is right for some architectural and appliance work, but it is not automatically better than 2B for general use — and it often costs more for no functional gain.

The "shinier is better" assumption is usually wrong. For most industrial and food-contact applications, a matte or brushed finish performs as well as a mirror one, cleans as easily, and costs a fraction. Choosing a finish by how it looks in a brochure rather than by how it will be used is the most common way buyers overspend on stainless.

How finish affects what you pay

Ask what the actual surface tolerance is. Two suppliers can both quote "2B" and deliver noticeably different surfaces. Ask for the surface roughness range, not just the code, and confirm it against your application.

Confirm the direction of grain on brushed finishes. No. 4 and hairline finishes have a directional grain, and if the direction matters for your fabrication, it needs to be stated. Get it wrong and the finished product can look mismatched where panels meet.

For polished finishes, ask whether it is passivated and how. A polished surface is often more corrosion-resistant than a rough one because it has fewer sites for pitting to start — but only if it is passivated correctly afterward. Ask how the passivation step is handled.
