Stainless Steel Grades for Marine and Offshore Applications
Marine environments present some of the most challenging conditions for stainless steel, requiring careful grade selection to ensure long-term performance.
Why Marine Environments are Challenging:
High chloride concentrations in seawater, combined with humidity, temperature variations, and UV exposure, create aggressive corrosive conditions.
Recommended Grades:
316 / 316L: The minimum recommended grade for marine applications. The molybdenum content provides essential chloride resistance. Suitable for coastal architecture, boat fittings, and marine equipment.
317 / 317L: Higher molybdenum content than 316, offering improved resistance in more aggressive marine environments.
Duplex Grades (2205, 2507): Excellent choice for offshore and submerged applications due to high strength and exceptional chloride resistance.
6% Moly Grades (254 SMO): For the most demanding marine environments including seawater handling systems.
Applications:
- Offshore platform components
- Desalination plant equipment
- Shipbuilding and marine hardware
- Coastal architectural structures
- Seawater piping systems
Maintenance Tips:
- Regular fresh water rinsing to remove salt deposits
- Periodic passivation to maintain the protective oxide layer
- Avoid carbon steel contamination
